‘THE DONN OF TIKI’: HOW 2D AND STOP-MOTION ANIMATION ELEVATE THIS DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE CREATOR OF TIKI CULTURE

We only appealed to the creative license whenever we encountered absolutely no reference from the archives or the internet, and in such cases, our thought process was, “Okay, how would they have designed this type of character back in the day?” which of course proved problematic for the character of “Pops Julian,” Donn’s loyal and most skilled bartender who was of Filipino origin. Co-directors Alex and Max really wanted to steer away from anything in his design that could be considered racist, which was particularly difficult because the time period for the animation (especially the 1930s and 40s) was filled with all kinds of negative depictions. In the end, I think we did a good job creating an appealing design without compromising the cheeky authenticity of the rubber-hose era.

Inside the unexpected rise of animated music videos

“Animation is invincible, more so during these times. Our cast and crew can’t be infected with the virus and our ‘actors’ – the cartoons – can travel anywhere, even to worlds that don’t exist,” says Juan M. Urbina, the COO of Colombia-based Venturia Animation Studios, which produced the wacky, Clampett-esque animated video for Tove Lo’s sadder badder cooler.

How They Did It: Creating A 1920s Rubber-Hose Animation Style For ‘Waldo’s Dream’

The upcoming Chilean animated feature Homeless, produced by Fábula and Lunes Animation Studio, has a decidedly contemporary look, however, the directors of the film wanted to have a short sequence in the feature made in the style of old Disney cartoons from the 1920s and early-1930s. To create that sequence, entitled “Waldo’s Dream,” they reached out to Colombia’s Venturia Animation Studios and director Juan M. Urbina.
